On today’s blog post, we are sharing an interview we did with one of our illustrators, Emma Discher! We hope you enjoy getting to know Emma a little bit more!
Q 1. What is your favorite thing about drawing in general?
A. “My favorite thing about drawing and painting in general is the creativity. It is something I can sit down and do at almost any time. It is extremely relaxing and such a beautiful way of expression that our Creator gave mankind.”
Q 2. What do you enjoy most about creating illustrations for children’s books?
A. “I love the light heartedness and simplicity of children’s books. You can be crazy and fun and colorful! Children are such a delight to draw for, especially since they really appreciate color and joy, two of my favorite things!”
Q 3. What inspired you to get into drawing and sketching originally?
A. “As a tiny person, my father, an excellent artist, though he pretends he is not, my older sister Grace, and my sister Rose were always creating beautiful drawings, and I wanted to do that someday. Combine that with the beautiful masterpieces of Beatrix Potter and Cicily Mary Barker, I was well set with inspiration to spur me on my drawing art adventure.”
Q 4. Of all the books you’ve illustrated, which one is your favorite so far?
A. “Though No Letter For Myra was a blast, I think the second was definitely more fun! Myra was the first REAL illustrating I had done professionally, so I was extremely new to it. Since No Letter For Myra came out roughly a year and a half ago, I have had a lot of time to practice. Of Mushrooms and Mice #2 definitely was more enjoyable. It also has more color than Myra. :)” (PS: Of Mushrooms and Mice book two will be coming out soon, and much of the art is featured in our all new board game!)
Q 5. What are some of your favorite animals to draw?
A. “Definitely mice, frogs and turtles! All three are small and cute! And each lives in abundance near my home, so studying their mannerisms and lifestyles is easy to do, so you get a firsthand experience with them.”
Q 6. Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of art?
A. “Yes! Besides art, I adore writing my own extremely long novels, baking (especially in the fall), time in God’s creation, reading and being a nerd, and just maybe I’m a little bit of a history buff.”
Q 7. When people experience your art through our stories, what do you hope they see or feel?
A. “I hope that when people experience my art, they see the beauty of the Creator. Through anything I do, if writing or baking or painting, I hope to express His creativity and goodness. We are His masterpiece, beautiful creatures made in His very image. I want to be a light in a world of confusion and darkness, pointing people to the love and beauty of the Supreme Artist. And if my little illustrations do that for somebody, I’ll be extremely happy!!”
Thank you, Emma, for sharing a little bit about yourself! Emma’s favorite pair of earrings from our shop are the Sunflowers Simplicity!
