On today’s blog post, we are sharing an interview we did with one of our illustrators, Rose Discher! (Click here to view her artist portfolio) We hope you enjoy getting to know Rose a little bit more!
1. What is your favorite thing about drawing in general?
It is an avenue for me to fully relax and use my God given creativity and imagination to make something beautiful. There is such delight and excitement in knowing that I can bring a blank canvas to life with mere strokes of a pencil or brush!
2. What do you enjoy most about creating illustrations for children’s books?
Well for one, they are just so very enjoyable to draw! They are simplistic in idea but in no way boring to illustrate, and that makes this particular job so very fun! There is also the hope that I am encouraging a child’s imagination to thrive and grow! I believe that a healthy imagination is so very important in a child’s life.
3. What inspired you to get into drawing and sketching originally?
My dad for sure! When I was very young, I remember looking through his sketch book and thinking just how incredible his pencil drawings were. The animals that filled that book looked so very lifelike, almost as if they could jump off of the page! That inspired me to start copying his drawings in hopes that I might one day get good enough to draw animals that looked just as real as his animals did.
4. Of all the books you’ve illustrated, which one is your favorite so far?
This past one, Psalm 150! It had a lot of challenges, but it was a very fulfilling book to see come to life! I love the color pallete I chose, so cheerful and happy:) And the details in the instruments I drew was such an enjoyable part of the book for me as I love drawing the little details! Also, the chapter held music in every verse! Every page was a dance of joy and praise to our God and oh, how happy it made me to illustrate that idea!
5. What are some of your favorite animals to draw?
This is such a difficult question to answer, but probably rabbits and insects! Once again, I love drawing small details and these hold such detail!
6. Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of art?
I had hoped to go into culinary school after my graduation from high school, but those doors closed and new ones opened. I do still very much enjoy cooking and baking though! Working in the kitchen is such a form of relaxation for me. A perfect afternoon involves Bing Crosby’s french music album playing on the speaker, a clean kitchen, and a baking/cooking project in the works! I also love playing the piano, landscaping, and babysitting my nieces and nephews!
7. When people experience your art through our stories, what do you hope they see or feel?
Clear beauty:) I see so much “art” in this world that portrays confusion and darkness, I want my art to reflect the exquisite beauty and order of our Creator’s design.
Thank you, Rose, for sharing a little bit about yourself! Rose’s favorite book that she has illustrated for us is Psalm 150! Check it out here!
